Rangahau: Activating Mātauranga Māori, Science, & Innovation
Activating Mātauranga Māori through rangahau /research is one of our Five Key Pathways within our Te Taiao Strategy. In fact, you could say it is the most important as it underpins the success of each of the other pathways providing the knowledge and insights necessary to realise our aspirations for regeneration.
By elevating Indigenous Wisdom alongside contemporary science and innovation, we create a powerful, integrated approach that respects and revitalises indigenous wisdom while embracing cutting-edge practices. This blending of knowledge systems enables us to deepen our understanding of Te Taiao’s complex ecosystems, uncover new solutions, and strengthen our capacity as kaitiaki. Through research, we bring clarity to inter-connected relationships within kāinga, whenua, and culture, fueling informed, culturally-grounded action toward restoring the mana and mauri of all living things.
Wai Ora Kāinga Ora
Wai Ora, Kāinga Ora is a current KM research programme co-led by Dr Jenny Lee-Morgan, and Dr Emily Afoa of Pūrangakura.
Rautāpatu is one of eight kāinga as 'pilot sites' representing different rohe and regional perspectives.
The overarching research question framing this programme is:
How can intergenerational kāinga-based solutions, with a focus on water regeneration, contribute to thriving kāinga and support the transition to a climate resilient Aotearoa?
Mana-Centred Kai Systems Strategy
Our Mana-Centred Kai Systems Strategy is a collaboration project with Bioeconomy Science Institute - AgResearch NZ. Together, we completed a Project Plan in 2024, and we are now activating phases to develop the Strategy - launching our Community Engagement phase: The Big Kai Redesign that will provide the community insights and aspirations as a community-led movement.

Te Kāhui Rau: Revitalising Te Taiao

Kaupapa Rangahau Workshop Series
Our Kaupapa Rangahau Workshop Series was a six week programme to share Kaupapa Māori Theory, Methods and Practice. The Programme was designed by Professor Leonie Pihama and is regionally supported by Tu Tama Wahine o Taranaki (check out upcoming dates). Our focus was on Te Taiao and providing a free accessible wānanga for whanau, and hapū .

Indigenous Entrepreneurship
This research outlines a framework for establishing an innovative Indigenous Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Support Programme that empowers Māori as leaders within a ‘Circular Cultural Economy.’ Download a Summary Presentation here.

The Hapū Toolkit is a set of resources we developed to support hapū development in areas such as strategy and visioning, healing frameworks, capacity and capability mapping, and project planning.
